About Mizuhiki

What is Mizuhiki?

Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese art form that uses tightly wound paper cords to create intricate designs, often in the form of knots. Originating over 1,300 years ago, Mizuhiki was first used in Japan as a decorative way to tie gifts and seal letters. The cords are made from washi (Japanese paper), which is twisted and stiffened to create strong yet flexible strands that can be shaped into elaborate patterns.

Throughout Japanese history, Mizuhiki has been an important part of ceremonies and celebrations, symbolizing connection, good fortune, and the bonds between people. The knots themselves carry different meanings depending on their style—some represent unity and others express well-wishes for prosperity or longevity.
